It is estimated that more than 1.5 million buildings in the UK contain asbestos-containing materials. There are strict regulations in place to prevent dangerous levels of asbestos exposure. To allow comparisons over time and by region of the UK, the HSE uses a standard mortality ratio (SMR), in which rates are standardized according to the age structure of the Great Britain population in 2018-2020.
A long-term trend of rising fatality rates in Great Britain has been evident for both males and females with Mesothelioma. Male and female mortality rates in 2018–2020 were 63.6 and 13.1 deaths per million, respectively, compared to 1984–1986, respectively. There was a clear increase in mortality rates for men across all areas over the long period. Despite the pandemic having affected the figures, asbestos remains a real threat to all areas of the UK.
In addition to working tirelessly to prevent people from being exposed to Asbestos in buildings, we can only look forward as there is little we can do for those who have already been affected.
